Disaster recovery is the next level to a complete backup with the shortest amount of time to recover a server to a functioning state.

While a tape (or media) backup is usually a satisfactory solution for most companies, it still requires the installation of the server software and the re-configuration of the AD users. Disaster recovery bypasses all this by making an image of the server and all it's components and if the server crashes the recovery can be as quick as a couple of hours versus one to two days from a regular backup.
